Untethering from Domain Names

I’ve written here about untethering from ambition, religion, possessions, even a blog and a business.

The idea behind untethering is that when something no longer serves you, you set it free.

Untethering is a way of disconnecting from the notion that you might need something someday. But does that day ever really come? In my experience, barring flashlights and a candle during power outages, it has not. (By this definition, my flashlight and candle are essentials…I guess. ) 8-)

The non-serving nature of domain names

A few years ago it became a common practice to secure domain names for long periods of time in hopes that you’d secure one so popular that someone would pay you an enormous amount of cash to sell it. For a $6-$12 investment, it was possible to reap thousands in return.

I wonder how many people are still paying $6-$12 per domain each year for the ‘maybe-one-day’ scenario?

Over the past several months, as their renewal dates approached, I’ve let 10 domain names expire. Why? They no longer served me in any way. I’ve let go of:

  • neveraskforrefererrals.com
  • bookblogbusiness.com
  • solo-dad.com
  • solo-dad.net
  • procasestudies.com
  • becomingirresistible.com
  • proposaldude.com
  • writeyourbook.net
  • geekfreewriting.com
  • heartofblogging.com

I had to ask myself each time a renewal date approached, Is owning this domain serving me in any way? If the answer was yes, I hung on to it. If the answer was no or I’m not sure, I untethered from it.

What’s needing to be untethered in your life?

This resonates with me BIG time. I don’t even know how many I have, but it does not serve me or anyone else to hoard (bad word, but that is what it is) the untapped potential in these domain names.

Hi Rebecca – “the untapped potential…’ That’s a great way to look at the end result of of any of our activities that lead us to maintaining more than we need. Thank for the comment!

I did the same thing, I let go of a few domains as well. Sites that I no longer have any attachments to, that were costing me money without giving me any value.
